Coron Island Hopping: Lagoons, Lakes & Japanese Wrecks.
Coron's island hopping is world-class — Kayangan Lake alone justifies the trip. But there are multiple tour combinations, and knowing which to pick saves you time and money.
The Classic Island Hopping Tours
How Tours Work
Island hopping boats depart daily at 8–9am from the municipal pier. Tours are offered in three standard packages (Tour A, B, C), each visiting 4–5 islands/sites. Lunch and snorkelling/swimming equipment are included. Tours return by 4–5pm. Cost: ₱1,500–₱2,000 per person in a group (6–10 people), or ₱5,000–₱8,000 for a private boat (4–6 people).
Book through your guesthouse, Viator, GetYourGuide, or at the pier the evening before. Morning walk-ins are possible but you might miss your tour if boats fill early.
Tour A: The Most Popular (Kayangan Lake + Twin Lagoon)
What You'll See
- Kayangan Lake (Morning): The cleanest freshwater lake in the Philippines. Entrance ₱300. A 10–15 minute steep hike down limestone stairs to reach the water (brutal hike back up). Crystal clear, surrounded by cliffs. Swim for 30–45 minutes, then hike to the viewpoint at the top for photos.
- Twin Lagoon (Late Morning): Two connected lagoons separated by a low rock wall. Swim under the wall to reach the second lagoon (or climb the narrow ladder if that freaks you out). The thermocline creates distinct water temperature layers—you'll sink through warm water to cooler depths.
- CYC (Coron Youth Club) Beach: A small beach, usually crowded with tour groups. Bathroom and hut facilities. Lunch is served here (₱100–₱150 per person if not included in your tour).
- Skeleton Wreck (Afternoon Snorkelling): A sunken Japanese cargo ship in shallow water (5–8m). You can snorkel directly over it or dive (requires PADI). Eerie to swim above a 1944 wreck.
Timing & Warnings
Kayangan Lake stairs are steep and uneven. Wear proper shoes (not flip-flops). If you have knee issues or are unfit, the hike down and (especially) back up will be painful. Bring water. The lake has a fixed exit time—if you're slow, you'll be rushed.
Twin Lagoon's rock passage is tight if you're claustrophobic or overweight. The ladder route is safer for non-swimmers. The thermocline (the layer of sudden temperature change) feels unsettling the first time you experience it.
Reality Check
Tour A is the most popular, which means it's also the most crowded. Kayangan Lake's stairs will have 30+ tourists going up and down. If you hate crowds, go early (6am departures exist; ask your guesthouse) or consider a private boat.
Tour B: Hidden Gems & Best Snorkelling
What You'll See
- Barracuda Lake: A surreal crater lake known for a thermocline at 38m depth. Non-divers can snorkel the shallows (clear, calm, stunning). Divers go deep and experience near-boiling water at depth—genuinely mind-bending if you're not ready for it.
- Smith Beach: A small white-sand beach, quieter than CYC because fewer tours visit here. Good for a slow lunch and swimming.
- Malcapuya Beach (Star Attraction): A private island with powder-white sand and coral gardens. Entry ₱300. This is what Instagram dream about—clear water, minimal crowds (compared to Kayangan), pristine sand. You'll likely spend 1.5–2 hours here. Many travellers rank it as Coron's best beach.
- Banana Island: A smaller, less-visited island used for snorkelling or just cruising. Good coral.
Why Locals Choose Tour B
Less crowded than Tour A. Malcapuya is legitimately stunning. If you're doing two island-hopping days, do Tour A on day 1 (because you have to for the logistical bucket list) and Tour B on day 2 (because it's actually better).
Tour C: Coral Gardens & Siete Pecados
What You'll See
- Siete Pecados ("Seven Sins"): A reef snorkelling site with excellent coral gardens, tropical fish schools, and good visibility. Not a beach or island, just a boat-anchored snorkelling spot.
- Atwayan Beach: A small beach, less crowded than Malcapuya.
- Calumbuyan Reef & other snorkelling sites: Depending on the operator, you might hit additional reefs with coral and fish.
When to Choose Tour C
If you're a strong snorkeller who prefers reef diving to beach island visits, Tour C is excellent. Better for coral enthusiasts, less appealing if you want to sunbathe on sand. Many non-diving snorkellers prefer Tour B (which includes Malcapuya's beach and snorkelling).
Private vs Group Tours
Group Tours (₱1,500–₱2,000)
Pros: Cheap, you meet other travellers, guide is experienced. Cons: Crowded boats, you follow the group's schedule, stops are rushed (30 min per site), lunch is basic, no customization.
Private Boats (₱5,000–₱8,000 for 4–6 people)
Pros: You set the pace, flexible stops, better food, quieter, the guide is just yours. Cons: Much more expensive per person if you're solo (₱5,000+ is pricey), you need to find 3–5 other people to split cost.
Best Value
If 3–4 of you meet at your guesthouse, split a private boat. You'll pay ₱1,500–₱2,000 per person (same as a group tour) and have a far superior experience. A guesthouse can usually gather 4–6 interested people if you ask staff to find others.
Practical Island Hopping Tips
What to Bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen: Zinc-based, SPF 30+ (not oxybenzone or octinoxate, which damage coral). Reapply every 2 hours.
- Snorkel gear: Rentals are cheap (₱100–₱200/day) but poor quality. Bring your own if you have room in your luggage.
- Reef shoes: Protect your feet from sea urchins and sharp coral. Flip-flops are useless.
- Waterproof bag: For phone, keys, money.
- Towel & change of clothes: You'll be wet most of the day.
- Water bottle: Stay hydrated. The sun is relentless on the water.
- Light snack: Tour lunches are basic; bring nuts or energy bars.
Timing & Departures
Boats leave at 8–9am sharp. Be at the pier 15 minutes early. Slow breakfast will make you late. If you sleep in on tour days, you'll miss your boat and lose your money (non-refundable).
What to Expect on the Boat
The bangka boats rock in any sea swell. If you get motion sickness, take dramamine 30 minutes before boarding. The journey to first stop (Kayangan Lake) is about 45 minutes, sometimes rough. Sit in the middle of the boat (less bouncy than the bow).
Jellyfish & Sea Conditions
April–June see occasional box jellyfish in shallow water. Ask your guide or guesthouse about current conditions. If stung, rinse with vinegar (carried on all tour boats), remove tentacles, and soak the area in hot water. Seek medical help if swelling spreads.
Go Early, Stay Hydrated
Early morning sun is intense. The water reflects it. You'll sunburn even with sunscreen. Wear a UPF rash guard if you have pale skin. Dehydration is real on full-day boat tours—drink water constantly, even if you don't feel thirsty.
Multi-Day Tour Strategies
Option 1: Two Island Hopping Days
Day 1: Tour A (Kayangan, Twin Lagoon, Skeleton Wreck). Day 2: Tour B (Barracuda Lake, Malcapuya, Smith Beach). You'll see the main attractions and understand Coron's appeal.
Option 2: One Island Hopping Day + One Diving Day
Day 1: Tour A morning, wreck diving afternoon (Okikawa Maru, Irako, or advanced wrecks). You'll get the lagoon experience and the historical wreck experience.
Option 3: Just Tour A
If you're only staying 2–3 days, do Tour A. It hits the iconic Coron sites. Tour B is better overall, but Tour A is the must-do bucket list.
Tour A (Most Popular): Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, CYC Beach, Skeleton Wreck. Crowded but mandatory. Tour B (Better): Barracuda Lake, Malcapuya Beach, Smith Beach, Banana Island. Less crowded, Malcapuya is stunning. Tour C (Snorkellers): Siete Pecados, coral gardens, reefs. Logistics: Group tours ₱1,500–₱2,000, private boats ₱5,000–₱8,000 (split 4–6 ways = same price, much better experience). Depart 8–9am, return 4–5pm. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, reef shoes, snorkel gear, waterproof bag, water. Warnings: Kayangan stairs are steep, Twin Lagoon thermocline is unsettling, boats rock in rough seas, go early.
